The memorial consists of a cast bronze plaque which depicts a detailed relief of a Highland soldier and a sailor, both in mourning pose with head bowed and rifle reversed. Below the Highlander is a St Andrews cross while below the sailor is a white ensign. The plaque is mounted on the wall of the Tollbooth museum on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.
In 2015 a grant of £35,190 was offered to eight different war memorials in Edinburgh for repair and conservation works. Following completion of the works in 2016 a grant of £27,600 was awarded as costs were lower than anticipated. This Showcase shows the grant paid for each grant as an eighth of the total cost, £3,450.
The works to the Cannongate war memorial dealt with corrosion of the bronze plaque due to exposure to weather. To address this issue works were undertaken to clean the bronze plaque before a protective wax was applied.
The memorial was designed by Louis Reid Deuchars.
