The memorial consists of a Celtic cross, surmounting a tampered square base with carved art deco lettering. It is raised on a retaining stone wall which also flanks the memorial forming a small enclosed area. The memorial is located on Duddingston Road West opposite the Causeway.

In 2015 a grant of £35,190 was offered to eight different war memorials in Edinburgh for repair and conservation works. Following completion of the works in 2016 a grant of £27,600 was awarded as costs were lower than anticipated. This Showcase shows the grant paid for each grant as an eighth of the total cost, £3,450.

The works to Duddingston war memorial dealt with structural issues. Ground movement had caused some damage to the low level wall to one side of the memorial. Mortar in the construction joints and wall was also cracked. In addition, the biological build up on the memorial was making the incised inscription more difficult to read. To address these issues the damaged section of the wall was rebuilt whilst the joints were also re-pointed on the wall and memorial joints in lime mortar. To improve the legibility of the incised inscription the memorial was also appropriately cleaned with steam.

The memorial was designed by architect George Washington Browne who lost three sons in World War I. It was erected by public subscription in 1921 but blown down in a gale the following year. In response iron supports were put on the rear of the cross shaft to support it.
