The memorial consists of a red granite plaque. A list of the fallen from World War I is incised and gilded. A cast-concrete frame and hood moulding surrounds the plaque. The memorial is located on Newhaven High Street.

In 2015 a grant of £35,190 was offered to eight different war memorials in Edinburgh for repair and conservation works. Following completion of the works in 2016 a grant of £27,600 was awarded as costs were lower than anticipated. This Showcase shows the grant paid for each grant as an eighth of the total cost, £3,450.

The works to Newhaven memorial dealt with extensive cracking to the concrete surround which was allowing water to enter the plaque causing further damage. In addition, the inscription on the memorial plaque was becoming difficult to read as the gold gilding was peeling off. To address these issues repair work was undertaken to the concrete surround and the lettering was re-gilded.

The memorial was erected by John Pottinger on the tenement buildings he also had built. His son is among the war dead listed.
