The category B listed memorial consists of a carved stone Celtic cross with incised inscription surmounting on a three-stepped tapered plinth with flanking tapered stones raised on a two-stepped base. The memorial is located at the junction of Baird Road and Freelands way.

In 2015 a grant of £35,190 was offered to eight different war memorials in Edinburgh for repair and conservation works. Following completion of the works in 2016 a grant of £27,600 was awarded as costs were lower than anticipated. This Showcase shows the grant paid for each grant as an eighth of the total cost, £3,450.

The works to Ratho war memorial dealt with biological growth and soiling on the memorial which was making the inscription difficult to read. To address this issue the memorial was appropriate cleaned with low pressure steam.

Unfortunately little is known about the history of the memorial.

The main inscription reads:

“Sacred
to the
memory
of Officers
and men of
Ratho
who fell in
the Great War
1914-1918”

“Lest we forget
those who laid
down their lives
that we might live”
