The category C listed memorial consists of a Mercat cross surmounted on a hexagonal plinth raised on a three-stepped base. The memorial is located on the village green near Dalmeny Church.
In 2015 a grant of £35,190 was offered to eight different war memorials in Edinburgh for repair and conservation works. Following completion of the works in 2016 a grant of £27,600 was awarded as costs were lower than anticipated. This Showcase shows the grant paid for each grant as an eighth of the total cost, £3,450.
The works to Dalmeny memorial dealt with missing and cracked mortar across the memorial and the surrounds, biological growth which was holding water onto the surface of the stone and corrosion of bronze plaques due to weathering. To address these issues works were undertaken to appropriately clean the stone and bronze plaques. A wax was applied to the bronze to protect it. And defective joints were re-pointed in a lime mortar.
The memorial was erected in 1920 to commemorate the men of Dalmeny Parish who fell in World War I. Their names are listed on a bronze commemorative plaque.
