The memorial takes the form of a sandstone Celtic cross which surmounts a square plinth on a two-stepped base. A World War I inscription appears on the plinth with a stone tablet carved in the design of a scroll resting against the steps to carry the World War II inscription and names. The memorial is located in Redhall Park, Slateford.

In 2015 a grant of £35,190 was offered to eight different war memorials in Edinburgh for repair and conservation works. Following completion of the works in 2016 a grant of £27,600 was awarded as costs were lower than anticipated. This Showcase shows the grant paid for each grant as an eighth of the total cost, £3,450.

The works to Slateford and Longstone war memorial dealt with biological growth and soiling on the memorial which was making the inscription difficult to read. To address this issue the memorial was appropriately cleaned with steam. In addition, open construction joints were re-pointed with a lime mortar.

Unfortunately little of the history of the memorial is known although it is understood that new foundations were installed in the 1970’s.
