England - Historic England

Historic England (formerly English Heritage) has supported war memorial grants since 2000 through the Grants for War Memorials scheme which is managed on its behalf by War Memorials Trust.

The Grants for War Memorials scheme

  • makes funds available for repair and conservation works to freestanding war memorials in England
  • promotes current best conservation practice. Historic England’s ‘The Conservation, Repair and Management of War Memorials’ gives detailed advice on repair and conservation principles which underlie the scheme. This is a key principle at the heart of the scheme to ensure no works are damaging to a memorial and ensure it is maintained for future generations. Some works may be considered to be outside the scope of funding but this does not mean they necessarily contravene conservation principles. General maintenance is considered to be the responsibility of custodians
  • is open to all freestanding war memorials in England, from any conflict
  • prioritises funding based on the need for works and their urgency
  • is managed by War Memorials Trust so anyone interested in applying for funding should start by reviewing the Apply for a grant section and completing a Grants Pre-application form. There is no separate process for these funds as War Memorials Trust will allocate projects to available funding as part of the assessment process. It is very important therefore that all information provided during the application process is accurate and complete as it can influence which funding scheme a war memorial can benefit from
