Woodham war memorial after work © WMT, 2005The war memorial in the churchyard of All Saint’s on Woodham Lane, Woking, Surrey is a Doulting stone gabled crucifix on a plinth on a large square Bargate stone base. The figure of Christ is made from bronze. Four squat stone blocks are situated on the base at the corners of the plinth. There are inscriptions on the plinth and on the stone blocks of the names of the fallen of World War I, and plaques have been attached to the faces of the base.

In 2002 the memorial was vandalised; the bronze figure was removed and cut up, and the top of the cross smashed. All the sections of the bronze figures were subsequently recovered from a nearby wood. The figure was welded together and the patina restored, and in July 2004 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation offered £3150 towards work to remove the damaged shaft, carve and erect a new cross and canopy and fix the figure back on to the memorial.

The dedications on the plinth read

To the undying memory of those who
gave their lives in the great war 1914 – 1918

Greater love hath no man than this that
a man lay down his life for his friends

The memorial was dedicated on 10th July 1920 by the Right Rev H Pakenham-Walsh. It was designed by Harry Inigo Triggs and the builder was Harris and Sons of Woking. After the restoration work was finished the memorial was rededicated on Sunday 14th November 2004.
