The Clayport Presbyterian Church war memorial plaque, which is now in the entrance vestibule of St James’s United Reformed Church on Pottergate in Alnwick, Northumberland, is made of bronze and has red and black lettering. Depictions of sprays of laurel are inscribed along the two vertical sides of the plaque. It is 4ft high and 2ft wide.
In 2007 the church was undergoing substantial remodelling, and applied to War Memorials Trust for money to remove, store and reposition the three memorials within the church; the Clayport plaque, the marble World War I plaque (WM1991) and the commemorative plaque for George Cockburn Robertson (WM3494) The Trust gave a total grant of £315 for this work.
The plaque is dedicated to those who served in World War I from the congregation of Clayport Presbyterian Church, which has since closed. The inscription at the top of the memorial reads
This tablet is erected by
Clayport Presbyterian Church Alnwick.
In gratefulness to Almighty God for victory granted
and to commemorate those belonging to the congregation
who served in the Great War 1914 – 1919
The names of the fallen are then listed, and then below this is a list of men from the congregation who returned.
The names of all commemorated on the memorial are available on the website of the North East War Memorials Project.
