Whitley Bay Miss Doris Ewbank and Civil Defence war memorials © J Pasby, 2009Whitley Bay Civil Defence Service and Special Constabulary memorial takes the form of a garden with pool (now converted into a flower bed) dedicated by a small granite plaque with black lead lettering (WM3942). Alongside this memorial is another plaque dedicated to Miss Doris Ewbank (WM941). Both plaques are placed in front of flowerbeds, above the path.

In August 2002 War Memorials Trust gave £250 towards the cleaning and re-lettering of memorial plaques to Miss Ewbank and her colleagues at the Whitley Bay Civil Defence.

The inscription on the memorial reads:

Whitley Bay Civil Defence war memorial © J Pasby, 2009This garden and pool
Has been provided to commemorate those of the
Civil Defence Service and Special Constabulary
of the Whitley Bay Urban District
who gave their lives in the war 1939-1945

The pool has since been converted into a flower bed.

The restored plaque was rededicated on 13th November 2002 at a service led by Rev. Dr. Chris Knight of St. Mary’s Church. Police, war veterans and councillors, as well as some current pupils of Backworth School and two other local schools, attended the ceremony.
