Congresbury war memorial hall © D Smith, 2013This war memorial hall is a brick building in-filled with stucco plastering located in Congresbury, Bristol. The building is used as a social club and the headquarters of Congresbury Branch Royal British Legion. In the hall are plaques dedicated to those who lost their lives in World War I and World War II as well as a further plaque dedicated to a Villager who lost his life in Iraq in 2003.

Congresbury war memorial hall © D Smith, 2013In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,805 towards works to make the hall watertight and to secure its future as a public building. The works included the removal of the two failing box valleys in between the double gabled roof and replacement with new, on a like for like basis. The joints were secured and sealed. The failing flat roof to the rear was removed as well as the rotten timbers and ceiling below, which was falling in. Finally, the asbestos roof was removed and properly disposed of.Congresbury war memorial hall © D Smith, 2013

In 2017, a further grant of £8,545 was awarded through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme supported by the First World War Memorials Programme. This asssited a survey of the Hall by a conservation-accredited professional to identify the works required. As a complex building the range of works can be extensive and it was important to understand all the requirements.

In 2018, following the survey, £21,455 was offered through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme supported by the First World War Memorials Programme. This assisted re-roofing works and fire safety measures to ensure the building could be used by the public.

The war memorial hall was unveiled on 11th December 1920 with around 600 people from the Congresbury area in attendance. It cost approximately £3,000 to construct.
