This war memorial consists of a hooded cross on a slightly tapered octagonal shaft which stands on an octagonal plinth and base, all constructed from a local limestone. It is located within St Mary the Virgin churchyard, Fairford. The memorial is dedicated to the men of Fairford who lost their lives serving in World War I and World War II.
In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £975 towards cleaning and conservation of the memorial. Cleaning was undertaken using non-metallic bristle brushes and low pressure water. The memorial was also re-pointed using a lime mortar which had been colour matched to the stone. Following cleaning it was found that the
lettering was still legible and did not require any works.
The memorial was designed by local architect Ernest William Gimson of Sapperton and was constructed by Messrs Farmer Brothers under the supervision of Norman Jewson, another local architect. The memorial was paid for by public subscription. It was dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Gloucester on 21st October 1920.
