Cononley Village Institute is the war memorial for the village and is located on Main Street. The building is designed in a typical vernacular style of the period with pitched slate roof and stone detailing such as quoins and window surrounds. The building pre-dates World War I but a clock tower and roll of honour were added after the War. The memorial is dedicated to those killed in both World Wars. The memorial is located in a conservation area.
In 2011 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £2,500 towards repair works to the memorial hall. The main problem was with the roof which was letting in water and the condition was confirmed by a structural survey. The works included stripping the slate tiles from the roof so the timber rafters could be inspected; original slates were used for re-roofing where possible which included the installation of breathable felt and insulation. A chimney was suspected to be a source of water ingress and this was also inspected for damage and made watertight. SmartWater was applied to metal elements as part of the In Memoriam 2014 project.
The Institute pre-dates World War I as it was donated by the Lund family of Malsis Hall in 1908; building started in July 1909 and was formally opened by Lady
Holland on 11th December 1909. Following World War I the building became the village’s memorial with the installation of a clock tower and roll of honour which replaced one of the windows; these were dedicated on 8th October 1921 and ownership was passed to the Parish Council the same year. It was common for existing buildings and sites to be re-dedicated as war memorials.
