East Stoke war memorial Shrine stands at the entrance to the Churchyard of the redundant St Mary's on the A352. It is constructed of red brick with white stone dressings. The memorial has three recesses. The central recess originally held a "Michael Angelo figure of the Crucified" described in 'A Short History of East Stoke by Rev. Hugh Selwyn Taggart M.A. published in 1940. However this has been vandalised at somepoint and now the recess contains a plain black cross and two flower containers. The other recesses contain names and inscriptions.
The memorial has received multiple grants and the summary details of this record relate to the most recent grant.
In 2005 the Small Grants Scheme contributed £150 towards a condition survey to assess the state of the memorial and investigate any works required.
This condition survey was undertaken after an application to the Grants for War Memorials Scheme in May 2005 was unsuccessful because the Panel had concerns about whether the works proposed would deal with some of the issues revealed by the photographic evidence. This included cracks to plaques. Following the condition survey the applicant was able to reapply for the scheme in November and received a grant of £1,300 as the Panel now had a full assessment of the current condition of the memorial. This contribution supported stonework repairs, re-pointing open joints with lime mortar on brickwork and stonework and cleaning with bristle brushes and water on brick and use of biocide and water on stone.
The memorial was uneviled on 23 April 1922 by Vice Admiral Fyler C.B., D.S.O. It was built by Purbeck Stone and General Trading Company, Swanage.
The inscriptions on the memorial read:
In grateful memory of the men of East Stoke, who fell in the Great War, 1914 - 1918
