Rickerby Park was purchased as a joint counties’ war memorial for Cumberland and Westmorland. As well as the wider memorial park it was decided to build a memorial bridge and the memorial cenotaph to the fallen of World War I within it. This war memorial, listed Grade II, is constructed of granite and sits on a raised platform surrounded by iron railings. The memorial has an incised
inscription above which are County, Town and regimental badges. At the top of the cenotaph is a wreath.
In 2011 an application was received to repair the railings surrounding the memorial. This included the repair of joints, replacement features and re-painting. A grant of £3550 was awarded against a project cost of £13,550. This amount represented less than 50% of the overall project costs as Carlisle City Council had already made £10,000 available towards the project.
The cenotaph was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and was unveiled on Thursday 5th May 1922. The First World War inscription on the cenotaph reads:
‘To the immortal memory of the men and women
of Cumberland and Westmorland
who gave their lives during the Great War
and in honour of the glorious services of the
Border Regiment
Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry
Cumberland Brigade Royal Field Artillery
Westmorland detachment R A M C’
