St Mary and St Nicolas Parish Church contains a World War II war memorial in the form of a Monks Park stone tablet alongside a sculpture of St Michael the Archangel slaying the devil in the shape of a dragon. The memorial includes names of civilians killed by enemy action as well as those serving in the Armed Forces. It is located close to St George’s Chapel which contains a reredos erected in 1921 to remember the fallen of World War I. The memorial is located within the Grade I listed Church.
In 2011, a grant of £512 was awarded towards the addition of four names to the plaque. The names were hand drawn and cut by hand in matching style, font and format to the existing. The lettering was then hand painted in blue with the additional crosses gilded, again, to match the existing appearance. As the Church is listed a faculty was required for the works.
The memorial was erected in 1949, funded by public subscription. The sculptor was Harold Youngman who produced the design of Lawrence Bold (church architect). A dedication service took place in 1951 led by Dr Maurice Harland, Bishop of Lincoln.
The top of the plaque reads:
“Remember with thanksgiving the
men and women of Spalding who
were killed in the War 1939-1945”
This is followed by a list of those killed, underneath which reads:
“Victory in battle standeth not
in the multitude of a host but
strength is from heaven”.
