Castle Gardens war memorial stands in the garden on The Causeway in Bishop’s Stortford. It is a limestone obelisk on a four-stepped base. The memorial is Grade II listed.
In 2011 War Memorials Trust offered £1,760 towards conservation works. Open and failed joints were raked out and re-pointed in lime mortar and lime mortar repairs were undertaken to small areas of stone damage. Some damage to the steps were repaired with matching stone indents. Loose bollards and cracks in the steps were pinned and fixed with stainless steel dowels and appropriate resin.
In 2014 a further grant of £4,530 was offered through the War Memorials Trust Grant Scheme for additional repair and conservation works. While repairs which had been carried out in 2011 were still in good condition, additional damage had occurred at the steps. Water was getting into the stone which in turn was causing wider damage. To stop this process, new sections of matching stone were used to replace areas of damage stone which was cut out. In addition stone replacement was also undertaken to replace a section of damaged on a surrounding bollard and a section of carved decorative stone on the memorial.
The memorial was designed by Mr H. J. Chetwood. It was built by J. Day & Son and dedicated on Sunday 3rd April 1921. The memorial remembers 207 men who lost their lives in World War I. In the 1960s the names of 107 who fell in World War II were engraved on the base of the memorial.
