This memorial is located on the road junction of the High Street and Vicarage Road in the village of Yalding in Kent. The memorial is in the style of a Cross of Sacrifice with a bronze sword and the column base and plinth are octagonal. The memorial is located within a semi-circular stone wall in which stone benches are built in to the interior; three steps give access to the memorial from the adjacent footpath. The front panel of the plinth and front plinth moulding are inscribed; bronze inscription plaques are attached to four faces of the plinth. The inscriptions on the memorial were originally inscribed into the faces of plinth and later covered with the metal plaques. The memorial commemorates those killed in the First and Second World Wars.
In 2010, a grant of £1,167 was offered through the Small Grants Scheme towards cleaning and repair works. Cleaning was by use of de-ionised water and non-metallic brushes with the application of non-ionic detergent where required. In the past, inappropriate cement repairs had been used on the memorial so these were cut out and replaced with Hollington stone and lime mortar to match the existing. A previous failed repair to the top step was made good with an insert of Portland stone to match the existing and held in place with non-ferrous fixings. The memorial had a number of large open joints and damaging cementitious pointing so these were raked out by hand and re-pointed with lime mortar.
The memorial was designed by Mr Cecil Burns and constructed by Messrs Burslem of Tunbridge Wells.
The front face of the plinth is inscribed:
“To the
glorious
dead
of this
parish
1914 – 1918”
Underneath this, inscribed on the plinth front face moulding, are the dates “1939 – 1945”
The bronze plaques on the rear and front-right faces of the memorial are each headed “1914 – 1918” and bear the names of those commemorated listed alphabetically by surname under their respective regiment or arm-of-service.
The bronze plaque on the front-left face of the memorial is headed “1939 – 1945” and likewise lists those commemorated alphabetically by surname; however, their Service, regiment or corps is shown after their name. This plaque also includes civilians who were killed as a result of enemy action.
