Lower Benefield war memorial cross © D. S. Kenyon, 2010Lower Benefield war memorial cross stands in the Churchyard of St Mary's. Two octagonal steps supported the plinth upon which stands a tapering shaft and crucifix. On the reverse of the crucifix is found a figure of the Virgin and Child. The memorial was listed in 2002 at grade II and is within Lower Benefield conservation area.

The memorial has received multiple grants and the summary details of this record relate to the most recent grant.

In 2002/3 English Heritage gave a grant of £250 towards cleaning the memorial as phase one of a staged project. It was felt in the circumstances that cleaning was required to enable a further review to be undertaken as to the extent of additional work required.

In 2005 War Memorials Trust made an offer of £250 towards repair work on the memorial through the Small Grants Scheme. This included assisting the costs of stonework repairs, re-pointing using a lime mortar and the preparation of a condition report.

Fourteen names of the Fallen from World War I are recorded on the memorial which was erected in 1919. The memorial was designed by Sir Ninian Comper.
