South Newington war memorial is in the south east corner of the churchyard of St Peter Ad Vincula. A cross surmounts a tall pillar atop a plinth on a one-stepped base. The memorial is located within a conservation area and the curtilage of the Grade I listed Church.
In July 2010 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,493 towards works to address the structural stability of the memorial. The top section of the shaft of the cross was leaning and there were a number of major cracks so the shaft had to be dismantled and internal dowels were replaced with stainless steel dowels, all corroding pins and cramps were replaced with stainless steel and all joints were re-pointed with lime mortar. The conservation project also included cleaning the memorial. Due to the complexity of the project a conservation-accredited Architect was hired to oversee the works and a faculty was also required.
The memorial was designed by Walter Tapper FRIBA and built by Arthur W Sturley of Banbury. It was built with stone donated by Captain Robert Brassey from Heythrop Park quarry near Chipping Norton. The south face of the plinth bears the inscription:
“They
gave their lives
for us
1914-1918”
The names of those commemorated are inscribed on the east and west faces of the plinth. The cost of the memorial was raised by public subscription. The memorial was dedicated on 4th August 1921 by Dr Hubert Burge, Bishop of Oxford.
