This memorial is located in St Mary’s Churchyard. It consists of a stone wheel cross atop a square stone column that sits on a three-stepped stone block base. The front face of the column has incised inscriptions. The memorial is dedicated to those killed in the First and Second World Wars. The memorial along with the adjacent wall are Grade II listed.
In 2010, a grant of £323 was offered through the Small Grants Scheme towards repair works. A number of the stone blocks forming the stepped layers were severely damaged and beyond repair so had to be replaced like-for-like. These new stone blocks were bonded with a lime based mortar mix to match the original mortar in colour, texture and finish. Likewise, defective joints elsewhere on the memorial were raked out and re-pointed with lime mortar. As the memorial is listed a Faculty was required for these works.
In 2017 a top up grant of £334 was awarded through the War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme (and £3,806 was offered by Cadw) towards steam cleaning, lime mortar pointing, stone repairs and inscription works to make the inscription legible.
The uppermost inscription on the front face of the column reads:
“To the
honoured memory
of the men
from this parish
who gave their
lives for
their country
in the Great War
1914-1918”
Below this inscription are the names of those commemorated from the First World War.
Beneath these names is the inscription:
“In the World War
1939-1945”
Under this inscription are the names of those commemorated from the Second World War.
