The Talgarth war memorial is located in The Square with the River Enig to the rear. The memorial site is stone paved and bordered by a low wall. Fronting each side wall is a raised flower bed also made of stone. In the centre is a rough hewn granite monolith fronted with a stone step on which the bronze plaque is located. The plaque is bordered with a floral design in relief. At the top of the plaque is a wreath design with central crucifix in relief, below which is the inscription. Set against the interior face of each side wall is a green-painted bench with scrolled arm rests.
In 2010, a grant of £482 was offered through the Small Grants Scheme towards repair works. Subsidence caused by the river meant that the wall was cracked and loose stone had been stolen. Therefore, sections of the boundary wall were rebuilt and missing stones replaced with matching stone; bedding and pointing was in a lime mortar mix to match the existing. The original concrete capping of the flower beds was removed; the wall and flower beds were then capped with the same lime mortar mix used to bed and point the wall. Displaced flagstones were re-laid and open joints raked out by hand; bedding and pointing was in a lime mortar mix to match the existing.
The memorial plaque was originally located within the rear boundary wall. By 1986 the upright portion of the wall containing the memorial plaque had become unsafe and the section was demolished and then rebuilt to the existing low level. The freestanding granite monolith was installed in 1986 and the plaque with backing stone mounted to its front face.
The upper portion of the inscription reads:
“To the proud and honoured memory
of the men from
the parish of Talgarth
who fell in the two World Wars”
The names of those commemorated are grouped by conflict; “1914 – 1918” then “1939 – 1945”
Below is the further inscription:
“Their sun went down
while it was yet dawn”
