This war memorial is a Limestone Latin Market Cross located in St Mary’s Churchyard, Bruton, Somerset. The cross is fixed into a floriated lancet socket mounted on a slim circular column. This sits on a hexagonal plinth which holds inscriptions in dedication to the fallen of World War I and World War II.
In July 2012 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1,040.00 for repairs to the memorial. The upper section of the shaft was suffering from severe cracking which was leading to structural weaknesses in the memorial. This was most likely as a result of the corrosion of the rods within the shaft, which expand as they rust leading to fractures and blowing of the stone. To repair the shaft, scaffolding was erected then the cross and the socket were removed and stored at a workshop, where all traces of the rust were carefully removed. The rusting internal fixings within the shaft were removed and replaced with stainless steel dowels and the damaged section of the shaft was repaired, with a small section being replaced with newly carved stone to match. The cross was then carefully fixed back in place using lime mortar.
The cracks in the lower base were filled and repaired using lime mortar mix to match the existing stone.
All vegetation was removed from the joints of the displaced base stones and they were re-bedded to this original position and fixed using a lime mortar to match the stone. All water traps on the steps were repaired using a colour-matched lime mortar.
The memorial was also cleaned using non-metallic bristle brushes and water.
The inscription on the memorial reads:

of the World.
