Ripon war memorial is located within Ripon Spa Gardens nearby to the notable civic statues to the first Marquess of Ripon and the late Lord Ripon. The memorial takes the form of a stone column with splayed base; the general dedicatory inscription is on the front face of the column, and the names of those killed in World Wars I and II are on the four faces of the base. The inscriptions are incised into the stone and painted. The column is topped by the bronze bust of a soldier and a bronze shield and wreath on the front face of the memorial. The memorial is Grade II listed and also located within a conservation area.
In 2011 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £650 towards the conservation and repair of the memorial. The works consisted of re-pointing any open joints in lime mortar and cleaning the bronze and stonework with the DOFF steam cleaning system. The bronzework was re-patinated and given a treatment of wax to protect the bronze. The works required listed building consent.
Following the establishment of a war memorial committee in 1919 and one abandoned project due to a lack of funds raised, the memorial was unveiled on 5th October 1921. The memorial was designed by Mr Wilcoxson who also designed the statue to Lord Ripon nearby.
The general dedicatory inscriptions on the memorial read:
“In
grateful
memory
of
Ripon men
who gave
their lives
for their
country
in the
Great War
1914 – 1918
and the
World War
1939 – 1945
And those who have
made the ultimate
sacrifice since”.
