Memorial following cleaning © St James the Great Church, 2010Harvington war memorial is located in St James the Great Churchyard on Shakespeare Lane, which is in a conservation area. A three-stepped stone base supports a square plinth and column which is topped with a cross.

In 2010, the Small Grants Scheme made a grant of £923 towards conservation works to the memorial and the addition of a name. The memorial was cleaned using the DOFF steam system to remove the lichen which was making the names illegible. This system has the benefits of not introducing any chemical or salts in the structure and also sterilising the stone to delay the re-growth of lichen. The defective joints were raked out by hand and re-pointed with lime based mortar mix (no cement was allowed in the mortar mix), Inscriptions completely obscured by lichen, displaced steps and open joints © St James the Great Church, 2010to match the original mortar in colour, texture and finish. The stones of the plinth were realigned. These works will ensure that there is not unnecessary ingress of water into the structure. Also, the name of Harry Bradshaw was added in similar to match existing inscriptions.

The history of the memorial’s creation is not known but in 1945 the names of those who fell in World War II were added to the memorial.Inscriptions now legible following cleaning © St James the Great Church, 2010
