This memorial is located at the crossroads in the centre of Shapwick. The memorial is composed of what is believed to be a 15th century base with a more recent plinth and Latin cross on top. The memorial is located within a conservation area and Grade II listed.
In 2010, War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £637 towards a re-pointing project to the base of the memorial. Following trials, re-pointing was undertaken with lime mortar and the addition of suitable aggregates to ensure the colour of the pointing matched the stonework of the base. Re-pointing in some cases could be considered maintenance work, and the Trust does not fund maintenance work. However, in certain cases it can be considered conservation or repair due to the circumstances such as a large amount of open joints. In this case, due to the age of the base it is particularly important that this type of work is undertaken as part of the conservation of the memorial, and it is essential that the work is undertaken using the appropriate methods and materials. Due to the importance of ensuring this medieval base was treated appropriately, a very detailed specification of how to undertake the project was produced.
In 2020 a grant of £1,330 was awarded by War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme to replace the cross finial and install a stainless steel dowel following severe damage.
Although the memorial is listed, following consultation with the local planning authority it was determined that Listed Building Consent was not required for the project.
