Disley cross after © Disley Parish Council, 2010The Disley war memorial is a sandstone Latin octagonal cross with splayed ends. The front face has a bronze Sword of Sacrifice. The cross is set above a stepped plinth with inscriptions in flush lead. The memorial is set within a raised paved area with a boundary wall and a flight of three steps. Unfortunately the design of this memorial is currently unknown. The memorial is located on Ram Green in the village of Disley.

An application was received by War Memorials Trust in April 2010. The proposals were to clean the memorial, restore the bronze sword, re-pointing with lime mortar, lifting and relaying paving and works to the lettering, comprising the replacement of missing letters and re-painting.

Disley cross inscription detail before © Disley Parish Council, 2010A grant offer was made in 2010 for up to £1,355 towards an estimated £2,710 project cost. The estimated project costs fell below the minimum of £3,000. However, this was due to exclusions and alterations to the original proposal which was over the threshold. As such the project was still considered under the Grants for War Memorials scheme. These changes in the proposal were the exclusion of Disley cross inscription detail after © Disley Parish Council, 2010the repainting of the lead lettering. As there was no evidence that the lead lettering had originally been painted this would have constituted an alteration in the original design intention. As such this element was removed from the project. Additionally the cost for cleaning was excluded from the overall project costs as this did not meet the grant criteria. However, this element was not excluded from being carried out at the expense of the applicant.

The Disley war memorial is Grade II listed and is dedicated to the men of Disley parish who fell in World War I with World War II names added at a later date.

The inscription reads:

“To the Everlasting Honour
of the Men of Disley Parish
Who gave their lives in
The Great War.
1914-1919.
This Cross is placed here
in Grateful Remembrance”

“Also of those Who Gave their Lives
in the Second World War
1939 + 1945”
