The war memorial in the village of Belford, Northumberland, is outside Belford Community Club Hall on West Street. It is a tiered monument of locally quarried sandstone, and in front of the memorial is a “hearth” of natural clay tiles upon which wreaths are placed, and in front of this is a wrought iron fence bordered by two stone pillars. The names of the fallen of two world wars are on bronze plaques on the front of the memorial; on the top tier the inscription 1939 – 1945 in the stone, and the names of the men of the Second World War on a plaque, and on the next tier down the inscription 1914 – 1918 and on the tier below that four bronze plaques with the names of the fallen of the First World War. Names on the memorial can be found on the website of the North East War Memorials Project.
The memorial has received multiple grants and the summary details of this record relate to the most recent grant.
In August 2005 English Heritage gave a grant of £1000 towards cleaning and re-pointing the stone and bronze work of the memorial, replacing paving tiles and the wooden fence, repairing the gates and replacing the pillar on the left hand side of the gate.
In September 2005 War Memorials Trust gave £250 towards the addition of four names to the memorial; Bombardier William Clothier and Pte. John White (World War I) and Driver Horace Percival Weir and Pte. Francis John Nixon (World War II). It is not known why these names were not originally added to the memorial. The memorial was rededicated in October 2005.
The site of the memorial was given by Squire Clarke of Belford and the memorial was erected by public subscription. The hall behind was originally a war memorial hall. The dedication ceremony took place in March 1922; the memorial was unveiled by Dr. James MacDonald. The memorial was designed by Mr. G.H. Lawson and the work carried out by Messrs Tully and Sons of Belford.
