The John Caudwell memorial is located on the south aisle within St Botolph’s Church, Westwick, Norfolk. The memorial is an English Oak board with a brass figure of Christ on an oak crucifix. Below the figure of Christ is the dedicatory plaque to John Caudwell. The Church is Grade I listed.
In 2010, War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £125 towards treatment of a severe furniture beetle infestation to the oak. The damage caused by the infestation meant that in some areas the wood had been weakened. The works included cleaning with a vacuum cleaner and application of a woodworm treatment and the consolidation of the oak board below the top of the cross (which was the worst affected area). Finally, the holes from the infestation were filled with a coloured wax, both to improve the appearance of the memorial but also to highlight if any of the infestation is still active as new holes will be visible.
This memorial is dedicated to the only casualty of World War II in the village; John Francis Tyndale Caudwell. John Caudwell served in the 1st Battalion of the Royal Norfolk Regiment and was the son of the Rector.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
Hallowed in Christ be the memory of
all gallant men and women who fell
in the great war 1939-1945 for the
freedom of the world they shall yet
stand before the throne an exceeding
great army and in that last muster
shall be found this our own beloved
John Francis Tyndale Caudwell
June 7th 1944
That they might have life
