Rayne war memorial is an octagonal shaft topped with a Latin cross. Constructed of Portland stone the inscription is in flush lead lettering on the plinth, the names of the fallen from World War II are on a tablet sloped against the shaft.
The memorial stands on the village green alongside the path leading to the Church on Shalford Road in Rayne, Essex.
War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,989 towards repair and conservation work. This included applying biocide and cleaning the memorial using bristle brushes and steam cleaning, removing damaged joints by hand and re-pointing with lime mortar. A coat of black paint was also applied to the lead lettering.
This war memorial received a further grant of £1,800 towards conservation works from War Memorials Trust in 2018. The memorial was cleaned using natural bristle brushes, a chemically neutral soap and low pressure water. The construction joints were raked out and repointed in lime mortar and the lettering was repainted to match the original design.
The memorial was dedicated in October 1920. It was funded by public subscription and cost £150. The site chosen for the memorial was where the first recruiting party met with the men of Rayne in 1914.
The inscription reads:
‘To the
memory of
those who fell
in the World War
1939-1945
Herbert Brock
Alec Channel
Robert Reynolds
John Scott
Edmund Law Staines’
‘To
the glory of God
and

of this village
who fell in the
Great War
1914-1918’
