This memorial plaque is dedicated to those killed in World War I and World War II from Drax, Camblesforth, Newland and Lancrick. The plaque is made of marble and the names of the fallen are incised and painted on to the front piece of white marble, which has a dark green backing piece of marble. The memorial is located in the Parish Church of Ss. Peter and Paul, Drax, North Yorkshire.
The condition of the backing piece of marble had deteriorated to an extent that it was crumbling to the touch and there was therefore concern regarding the stability of the memorial. The wall the memorial was located on was suffering from damp, and the memorial was also located above a radiator. Therefore, in 2009 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1,350 for the memorial to be removed from the wall and for the white section of marble to be cleaned and for the lettering to be re-painted to restore the legibility of the inscriptions. A new green marble surround and backing was provided to replace the damaged original crumbling marble, and the whole plaque was re-attached to a pillar in the Church. Even though measures had been taken to address the damp problem for the wall the memorial was originally located on, fluctuations in temperature which would be experienced from being located above a radiator would also hasten the deterioration of the marble, so a new prominent location was sought.
The inscription on this memorial reads:
“To the glory of God
and in memory of the following men from
Drax, Camblesforth, Newland, & Lancrick
who gave their lives in the Great War of 1914-1919”
“And in the War of 1939-45.”
