Halsall war memorial is in the form of a limestone market cross; the base probably dates from the 15th century and is made of sandstone. The cross is located on an octagonal four-stepped base and moulded plinth surmounted by a shaft and cross which details a carved crucifixion scene and pitched roof. The inscriptions are incised on the sides of the steps and names are detailed on tablets which rest on the bottom step. The memorial is bordered by a low stone step and chain-linked posts; stones infill the space between the memorial and the outer step.
The memorial is located on the junction of Halsall Road, New Street, and Summerwood Lane.
In 2009, War Memorials Trust through the Small Grants Scheme offered a grant of £961 towards conservation and repair works for the memorial. These works included the cleaning of the memorial with the specialist DOFF steam cleaning system which is suitable for use on historic stone, as well as any defective joints on the memorial being raked out and re-pointed with hydraulic lime mortar to ensure that the memorial did not allow any unnecessary water into its structure. The posts which surround the memorial also required repairing and they were removed and stainless steel dowels were reinserted to secure them. A missing section of chain was also replaced and all chains were repainted black.
The memorial dates from around 1920 and is Grade II listed and located within a conservation area.
The main dedicatory inscriptions on the memorial reads:
“This cross has been set up on the ancient base by the Halsall parishioners in memory of their kinsmen who fell for King and country 1914-1919 their names are inscribed below”
“We also remember before God those who fell
1939-1945”
