This war memorial is a thatched bus shelter. The structure is made from ash poles with elm boards and roof of fir thatch.
It is located in the village of Dunchurch, near Rugby, Warwickshire.
War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £138 towards a replacement bronze plaque as the original was no longer in place.
Plans for the bus shelter began in July 1949 when a local Alderman, A. L. Adkinson JP offered the bus shelter to the village as a gift. A newspaper report from November 1949 recalls how, ‘for a long time he had seen people waiting for buses either in the rain or the hot sun and the shelter would fill a long-felt want. (He said) “I know there has been a lot of criticism. Some people have said, ‘Are you building something for courting couples?’ I hope we are” '.
The shelter was designed by Mr T. G. Castle, a local man. It was unveiled on 14th December 1949 by Colonel W. Bigwood. The shelter is Grade II listed.
The inscription reads:
“This bus shelter is a war memorial donated by Alderman A.L. Adkinson JP opened 14-12-1949 by Colonel W. Bigwood for the people of Dunchurch. Re-dedicated December 2009”
