Newton Regis lychgate © Christopher Thomas, 2009This war memorial is an oak lychgate on sandstone base. It has three gates and a tiled roof. A dedication inscription is carved into the timber.

The lychgate is located outside St Mary’s Church in Newton Regis, Warwickshire.

A grant of £2,085 was given for a number of works involving timber repair mostly to the sole beams which are the horizontal beams sitting on the stone base. These often rot due to being in direct contact with damp stone. Unfortunately, the side gate was beyond repair and had to be replaced. The rot had been caused by rain dripping off the edge of the roof overhanging the gate. All the new timber was painted with lime wash to tone it down and make it blend in with the weathered oak.

It is thought the lychgate was dedicated in 1928. It may have been designed by Linford Bridgeman but the evidence is not conclusive.

The inscription reads:

1914-1919 (front) Newton Regis lychgate © St Mary's Lychgate Restoration Group, 2008
In memoriam (back)
