The war memorial commemorating the fallen of Crediton and the surrounding hamlets of mid Devon takes the form of an octagonal market cross, with a timber arcade enclosing an area flagged in sandstone. In the centre of the arcade is a stepped octagonal shaft of Pocombe sandstone upon which are Portland stone inscription panels. The roof is steeply pitched and shingled with oak; it rises to an open lantern above which is a steeple topped with a cross. The memorial stands on Union Road, Crediton, in front of Newcombes Meadow playing fields.
In 2001/2 English Heritage offered a grant of £1,830 towards a variety of work to the whole memorial. The Portland stone inscription panels were cleaned using water and brushes and re-pointed with lime based mortar. Weeds and organic material were removed from the posts and the floor, the floor and the bottom bed of the post bases were re-pointed, damaged post bases and paving stones were repaired using stone indents and damaged seat plinths and cornices were repaired using ‘plastic’ repair. Finally, the shingles and timber bases were cleaned of moss and algae and debris removed from fissures in the timber framing.
The fallen of World War I are commemorated on the main shaft and the men of World War II on panels above this. The simple dedication reads:
"Crediton town
and hamlets
war memorial
1914 – 1919
For us they died"
A further plaque has been added to commemorate a soldier who died during the Aden Emergency. The memorial was built by Frederick Bligh Bond and was completed in 1923.
