The war memorial in the Durham town of Sedgefield is a sandstone cross on a slim octagonal pillar on a plinth. The cross has pairs of crockets on each arm. The capital of the pillar and the top of the plinth are both crenellated. On the front of the plinth is a shield decorated with a cross and lions and below this a slate panel inscribed with the names of the fallen of two world wars. There is another panel on the side of the memorial. The plinth is built into the wall which surrounds St Edmund’s church, beside the lychgate. It is on a set of three steps and is surrounded by metal railings.
In October 2002 English Heritage offered a grant towards work to clean the memorial using biocide, water and soft bristle brushes, to repair the stonework, including re-adhering large detaching flakes of stone, grouting cracks and repairing mortar and re-pointing, to remove flaking paint from the shield and to re-touch the paintwork. In 2004 payment of £1,850 was made.
The dedication on the panel reads:
"In grateful memory of the
men of Sedgefield Bradbury and
Mordon who gave their lives
in the Great War of 1914 – 1919"
"In grateful memory of
those who gave their lives
in the World War of 1939 -1945"
The names of the fallen are listed underneath the war in which they died. The text on the back of the memorial reads:
"Pass not this stone in sorrow but in pride
And may you live as nobly as they died."
"Lord grant them eternal life"
The memorial was unveiled on 4th March 1921 by Lord Vaux CMG DSO and dedicated by Lord Bishop Henson of Durham.
