The war memorial in the market town of Buntingford, in north east Hertfordshire, is a Portland stone cross on a pillar. There is moulding at the top of the pillar, and at its base are some blind Gothic-style arches. The pillar stands on a plinth on a three-stepped base. On one face of the plinth is the dedication to the fallen of World War I and the names of the fallen are recorded around the plinth in raised lettering. Above the lists of names crossed bayonets are sculpted in low relief. The fallen of World War II have been added to the back of the memorial. The memorial stands in the middle of a lawn on a raised area in front of the church of St Peter’s on Market Hill.
In 2003/4 English Heritage offered a grant of £2,793 towards work to clean the memorial by the application of masonry biocide, to rake out and repair failing joints, to repair and consolidate the areas of crumbling stone, to replace the lowest step, which was severely cracked, and to replace missing lead lettering.
The dedication reads:
"1914 – 1918
To the glorious memory of the men
of this town who fell in the Great War
“Their name liveth for evermore”"
The World War II text is carved underneath a shallow relief laurel wreath and reads:
"And the World War 1939 -1945
A.J. Bishop R. Graves
E.R. Borsberry H. Hagger
D.R. Rennie – Brown C. Hurry
NJ. Cornes P. Slattery"
After the work was finished a rededication service was held on Sunday 7th November 2004.
