Flamstead war memorial ©WMT, 2008The war memorial in Flamstead, western Hertfordshire, is designed after Sir Reginald Blomfield’s Cross of Sacrifice, being a Portland stone Latin cross with a down-pointing sword carved in relief on the front. The shaft of the cross is moulded at the bottom and sits on an octagonal plinth on a square base. The whole monument is on a brick and flint buttress supporting the brick and flint wall around the churchyard of St Leonard’s.

In 2004/5 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation gave a grant of £925 towards work to clean the memorial and make the lettering more legible.

The inscription on the front of the memorial reads:

"To
the glory of God
and
in memory of the men of
this parish who made the
supreme sacrifice in the
Great War
1914 – 1918"

There is also a quotation from The Pilgrim’s Progress:

"So he passed over and all the
trumpets sounded for him on the
other side"

On the back of the memorial the dates of World War II have been added and the names of those who fell in that conflict. On two sides of the plinth are the names of the World War I fallen.

Nothing is known of the designer or builder of the memorial, which is Grade II listed.
