WM1345 Braithwell war memorial cross © Anne Diver, 2012The war memorial in the village of Braithwell, South Yorkshire, is a solid wheel cross of rough limestone, with a down-pointing sword carved in low relief on the front. The cross stands on a rough stone plinth and a square base and is flanked by two small stone flower holders. There is a dedication at the bottom of the shaft and the names of the fallen are inscribed on the polished front of the plinth and on a panel on a side face. The memorial is situated in a paved area surrounded by a wall, into part of which are set metal railings to allow a view through to the memorial. It is at the corners of Church Grove and the High Street. The memorial is Grade II listed.

In September 2004 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation offered a grant of £4378 towards work to clean the memorial and clean and conserve the railings.

At the base of the shaft is the inscription

The
Great
War 1914 – 1918

The names of the fallen of World War I are inscribed on the front of the plinth and of World War II on the side face, under the dates of that conflict.

The memorial was made by Tyas & Guest of Swinton and dedicated on 16th April 1921 by the Earl of Scarborough, who had donated the land upon which it was built. The Earl of Scarborough had himself served in the Boer War and was Director-General of the Territorial Force until his retirement in 1921. Local officials such as the chairman of the parish council and the headmaster were in attendance at the ceremony as well as local clergy and the public.

After the work was completed the memorial was rededicated on Sunday 13th November 2005 in the presence of the current Earl of Scarborough.
