This war memorial is a simple sandstone Latin cross on square plinth and octagonal single step. The inscriptions were originally cut into the stone but were later replaced with metal plaques.
The cross is located at St Leonard’s Church, High Street, Yardley Gobion, Northamptonshire.
The main issues with the memorial were that the plaques were incorrectly fixed to the stone with ferrous fixings. These had begun to rust and needed replacing with stainless steel. The joint near the top of the shaft had also become loose and needed to be re-fixed with stainless steel pins. Cleaning was undertaken by hand with water and non-metallic bristle brushes. Some areas of the memorial were re-pointed and one mortar repair applied to the moulding at the plinth base. War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1,606 towards these works.
The memorial was built by J. G. Pullen and Sons and unveiled in 1921. It is dedicated to those who fell in World War I and II. There is an additional plaque for members of the Royal Canadian Air Force who crashed an aircraft near the village on 20th March 1944.
