The war memorial for the World War I fallen of Gilling East, Cawton and Grimstone, villages on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire moors, is a sandstone archway forming the west entrance to churchyard of the Church of the Holy Cross, Gilling East. On the lintel there is a dedication in gold-painted Gothic script on a red background and into the piers are set enamelled brass tablets on each of which is a gilded list of names of the fallen. A stone cross stands on top of the lintel. The memorial is situated on Main Street.
In January 2005 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation offered a grant of £255 towards work to repaint the red background on the lintel and to re-gild the lettering.
