This war memorial is a lychgate, with stone base and oak structure above. It is located in front of St Mary’s Church, Hutton Magna, near Richmond in North Yorkshire.
The main issues with the memorial were that the oak gutters had rotted, slates had slipped on the roof, and the decorative crosses were damaged by rot. A grant was offered for £1,420 to remedy these problems. The gutters were replaced and lined with bitumen coated aluminium to waterproof them. Slates were re-fixed on the roof and the decorative cross was re-carved.
The lychgate was designed by architects Connon and Chorley of Leeds. It was paid for by public subscription at a cost of £800. Harry Sutton Chorley also designed Hotel Metropole in Leeds. The structure was built by Robert Thompson of Kilburn, famous for his ‘mouse’ furniture.
The lychgate was dedicated in1921 by the Venerable Henry Armstrong Hall, Archdeacon of Richmond. It commemorates the fallen of World War I.
