Carshalton

The war memorial in the north Surrey town of Carshalton is a large cenotaph. The large block of Portland stone, cross shaped in cross section, stands on a two-stepped stone base. The top of the block is carved with pilasters at the corners and is topped with moulded cornices. There are inscriptions in relief on four faces of the memorial and large bronze plaques listing the names of the fallen are mounted on two sides of the memorial. Two smaller bronze plaques are on the narrow sides of the memorial. The memorial stands on a York stone paved area in the Garden of Remembrance beside Carshalton Ponds on Honeywood Walk.

The memorial was showing significant signs of weathering and pollution; some of the stone was cracked and there was a lot of moss coverage. Water was entering the joints, causing stones to be misaligned and the bronze plaques were coming away from the stone. In August 2005 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation offered a grant of £900 towards work to clean the stonework, bronze plaques and paved area with a high pressure steam system, to rake out and re-point the joints and to investigate methods of fixing the plaques.

Below the text are the bronze plaques listing the names of the fallen.

On the two narrower sides of the memorial are the dates

1914-1918
1939-1945

with small bronze plaques beneath.

The memorial was unveiled in March 1921 by Maj Gen Sir John Longley CB. It was designed by a firm from Tunbridge Wells connected to E H Bourchier FRIBA and Sidney Tatchell.
