The World War I memorial in the churchyard of St Stephen’s church, Sneinton, Nottingham, is a Grade II listed gabled oak crucifix on a limestone plinth, standing on a two-stepped limestone base. The sculpture of Christ is made of cast iron. There are bronze plaques inscribed with dedications around the faces of the plinth and the bargeboards of the gable are also inscribed.
Cement repairs had been made to the stonework, which is unsuitable for such structures, and the bronze plaque had been removed from the faces of the memorial for safekeeping. In 2005/6 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation offered a grant of £4,425 towards work to conserve the stone and metal areas of the memorial and to replace the brass plaques on the faces of the plinth. The memorial was cleaned, cement repairs to the plinth and steps removed and the stonework repaired with pins and lime putty, with re-pointing carried out where necessary. The cast iron figure was repaired by removing the grease and paint, filling the holes and re-painting.
The inscription on the bargeboards of the gable reads
"By thy cross and passion"
And the inscription on the plaques around the faces of the plinth
"In grateful memory
of the
men of Sneinton
who fell in the
Great War
1914-1918"
To the honour and glory of the ever blessed trinity.
All ye who pass by of your charity pray for the souls of the Sneinton men who fell in the Great War of 1914-1918 laid down their lives for justice and freedom to whose memory this calvary is erected.
Grant to them O Lord, eternal rest and may light perpetual shine upon them. 1920.
The memorial was designed by Mr C G Hare and cost £350. Father Dalrymple unveiled the memorial on May 20th 1920 in the presence of ten other clergy.
After the restoration work was completed a rededication service was held in May 2007.
