The war memorial in the northern Somerset village of Yatton is a Clipsham stone pillar topped with an Ionic capital. It stands on a plinth and a four-stepped base in a gravelled area at the junction of Rock Road and the High Street. Copper alloy plaques on two sides of the memorial commemorate the fallen.
The plaques on the memorials had become badly tarnished and difficult to read as the varnish coating was degrading leading to areas of the plaque tarnishing at different rates. In 2006/7 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation gave a grant of £360 towards work to remove the deteriorating layer of varnish from the copper alloy plaques, to remove the corrosion and apply a protective wax coating.
The dedication to the World War I fallen reads:
"To the glory of God
and in memory of the men of Yatton
who fell in the Great War 1914 – 1919"
The fallen are listed by year, with their rank and regiment.
The World War II inscription reads
"To the glory of God
and in honour of the men and women of this parish
who fell in the War of 1939 – 1945"
There are separate lists of those who died on war service and those who were killed by enemy action.
The memorial was designed by Rev F E Peert and built by Messrs Cowlan. It was unveiled on Tuesday 25th July 1922 by Col W Long.
