The war memorial in the south Yorkshire village of Clayton is a limestone cross on a slim pillar which stands on a plinth and a three-stepped base. It is situated on a paved area on a green, in front of trees and a bench, and is surrounded by a low post and chain fence. It is at the junction of Churchfield Road and Tan Pit Lane.
In 2006/7 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation gave £3,247 towards work to replace the lowest step of the memorial which was badly spalled, to re-lay the flagstones around the memorial and to renew damaged or replace missing posts supporting the chain fence.
Little is known of the origins of the memorial; its date of erection, commissioner and designer are all unknown. However, an order of service for Clayton with Frickley war memorial dated 1920-23 is extant.
