WM1778 Lewisham University Hospital war memorial © Terry R A Giles, 2011The World War I memorial at University Hospital, Lewisham, south London, is a granite tablet with lead lettering and an inscribed stone bowl. It is set at an angle in the garden in front of the old library building facing on to Lewisham High Street.

In June 2006 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation gave £420 towards work to clean the memorial and undertake tests to establish the correct method for repairing the lead lettering.

The dedication on the tablet reads

Dedicated to the brave men who died in this hospital and laid down their lives for the British empire 1914-1919. And to Dorothy Goodman and Helen Knibb who died at their post of duty nursing the sick and wounded
Erected by the medical and nursing staff Lewisham military hospital

The names of those commemorated are listed on the memorial.

On 4th August 1998 a rededication service was held for the memorial as it had been moved due to building work; the memorial had nearly been discarded by builders and was saved thanks to the intervention of one individual. The service was conducted by the hospital chaplain, the Reverend Annie Shaw and wreaths were laid. A small plaque in front of the memorial commemorates this.
