After World War I the base of the late thirteenth century church cross in the churchyard of St John the Baptist in the village of Kinlet in northern Worcestershire was restored and rededicated as a war memorial. The structure, which dates from 1290 – 1300 is now Grade II listed. The base is a four-sided structure of sandstone of about 10 ft high, with steeply pitched gables and niched recesses on each side. A cross stands on this base. The recess on the west elevation is deeper than the others and was probably used to kneel in. A stone memorial plaque is set into the recess on the south face of the base, inscribed with a dedication.
The stone of the monument was affected by significant splitting and degradation, allowing water ingress, and settlement and subsidence of the foundations. It had also been repaired with unsuitable cement mortar. In 2006/7 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation gave a grant of £9,962 towards work to investigate the cause of the subsidence and from there to stabilise the foundations of the structure, to rake out and re-point joints where necessary, plus pinning or galleting them if the fissure had become too wide, to cut the existing stone on the east face arch back to form a flat face on which new stone could be pinned and mortared, to reset all the plinth stones and to replace some other stones where necessary.
The dedication on the plaque reads
"Our
churchyard cross
was
restored and rededicated
August 1921
to the glory of God
and
in thankful memory
of all those
who from this parish
fought and fell
for their country
in the
Great War
1914 – 1918"
The monument was dedicated as a war memorial by the dean of Hereford in August 1921.
