This memorial is composed of a square sandstone base and plinth (which was a later addition) surmounted by red granite in a boulder shape. The memorial has a brass plaque which carries the dedication for those killed in the Boer War. The memorial is located within a garden of remembrance dedicated to those killed in World War II, which is located on Galgate, Barnard Castle. The memorial is Grade II listed, and located within Barnard Castle conservation area.
In 2007 a grant of £1025 was given by the Grants for War Memorials scheme for cleaning the algae off the memorial with water and bristle brushes, a biocide was applied to delay the re-growth of the algae. Defective joints were raked out and re-pointed using a hydraulic lime mortar which matched the original in colour and strength. The joint between the plinth and base was also re-pointed. The plaque was cleaned carefully to remove the surface dirt but so as not to disturb the patina, and microcrystalline wax was applied.
This memorial was unveiled on 27th July 1905 by Colonel V Grimshaw of the third Battalion Durham (militia) Light Infantry, and was dedicated by Reverend Penrose. A memorial garden was created around the memorial after World War II. The memorial was listed on 21st September 2006, the reasons for its listing are described in the listing description as ‘War memorials have a very strong historical and cultural significance on both a local and national scale and Boer War memorials are relatively scarce and will normally warrant designation. This example fully meets the criteria for listing in a national context.’
The main Boer War dedicatory inscription on the memorial reads:
Pro patria
In memory of the Officers, NCOs and men of the
3rd (Militia) Batt the Durham Light Infantry
The Imperial Yeomanry and local volunteers
attached to the line regiments
who died in South Africa during the Boer War
1899-1902
