Calverley

The Grade II listed war memorial in Victoria Park in the village of Calverley, Leeds is a bronze statue of a female figure on top of a pillar, on a Portland stone plinth and a two-stepped base. The pillar has a moulded top and bottom. The statue is wearing classical draped clothing and holding in one hand a wreath, in the other a small winged figure carrying a wreath. There is text in raised lettering on the front face of the pillar, and bronze plaques on the other faces list the names of the fallen of the two world wars. There are bronze military badges of each of the three armed services on the memorial above these rolls of honour. The memorial is set on a raised paved area in a flower bed, approached by steps and surrounded by iron railings.

In 2008 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation gave £3,999 towards work to clean the memorial, to carry out a minor repair to the Second World War plaque, to re-patinate the bronze and cover it in protective wax, to rake out joints where necessary and to re-point them, to re-paint lettering where necessary and to re-set the riser of one step which was loose.

The dedication reads

"In memory of
the
Calverley men
who fell in
the Great War
1914-18

Their name liveth for evermore

and in the war
1939 - 1945"

The memorial was erected in 1922 and the sculptor was Louis Frederick Roslyn.
